Today was my first fashion show. No, not my first show of the season--my first show ever. I didn't realize that the phrase "first show" was ambiguous until I mentioned it to the fashion week veterans next to me. "Oh of the season?" Nope. Ever.
I was really surprised by their surprise when they told me "but you don't look like a rookie!" They told me I fit right in, especially with my pink suit ("peach? or is it more of a melon? and the hearts!"). I guess I'm a decent pretender because let me tell you, I am as rookie as a rookie can be in terms of being at fashion shows, if you don't count the fashion show I modeled in when I was 5.
Being a rookie is scary, but exciting--kind of like being a freshman in high school or even now, a freshman in college. You don't really know what to expect and you don't know what to do. You just kind of make things up along as you go, and sometimes you get lucky. Like when I was seated in the second row and didn't realize it really wasn't the ideal place for photos and the man next to me, realizing my own realization of my misjudgment whispered "switch" and mid-model we surreptitiously switched seats. "You'll get a better shot from there." Even in the fashion world, despite the stereotypes, there are people who are kind and who will help you out of minor pitfalls.
As for the collection, I really liked it. It's not something I would normally find myself really attracted to but the presentation and the effortlessness of it really sold me. It inspired to make sure I keep my eyes wide and my mind non discriminating when it comes to fashion. It's okay to be a rookie, because it means I've made my start and I don't intend to stop soon.
